Customized Coaching Programs
For when you want concentrated attention and skill-building for a staff member (mid- to high-level manager or professional)
Do you find yourself experiencing…?
As a manager, do you find yourself in any of these situations with your staff members (i.e. direct reports)? You…
- thought you picked the best person for one of your staff positions, but she seems to be getting an extra-slow start
- want more for one of your staff members —more accomplishment, development, advancement —than they seem to want for themselves
- are working harder than he is about filling a skill-gap or performance deficit
- see one of your staff members struggling to fit it or isolating himself
- are hearing too many concerns about a staff member from your peers or the rest of your staff
- are approached way too often by certain staff members, expecting you to make decisions that are really theirs
- have one staff member that has lots of potential, but you yourself cannot keep up with their developmental needs, and you don’t want to be the bottle-neck to their success
When you find yourself in this situation…
You might think that you just need to carve out more time or come up with more creative ideas to develop your staff member, but you and I both know that making that happen is much harder than it sounds. What I’ve seen is that having an outside perspective and someone who can focus entirely on that struggling employee or high-flyer is what will truly change the game.
A private forum like a customized coaching program can give your staff member the freedom to explore and address what is or isn’t working, and choose how to deal with it. And, as their supervisor, you still play a very important role in their development, just without you having to dedicate so much time and energy.
When your staff members get the regular, focused support they need,
they are more likely to make good on the talent and potential you once saw in them. You’ll see them:
- empower themselves to make decisions that are truly theirs to make.
- act from a place of knowing where they fit in the scheme of your team, what complementary skills they bring to the table, and to appreciate other’s roles and skills.
- identify what skills they need, and what habits are and are not working for them, so they can deliver on what’s expected of them and can feel successful at what’s important to them.
- use all the resources available to them to accelerate their progress at playing their role.
- bringing more value to the organization.
A customized coaching program provides a structure and support to accomplish this. The program can also reinforce any culture change initiative, VIP Success Package or training that has been done thus far.
Programs can stand alone or be an extension of a VIP Success Package. The program includes an exclusive Private Individual Success Plan for those being coached.
Depending on the depth of the issue, over the course of 3-12 months, I will work with your chosen staff member(s) to develop and implement their own Private Manager Success Plan, using my Signature System summarized here.
Step 1. Assess the Situation – Determine staff member’s recognition of what needs to change, and their willingness to do so.
Step 2. Develop Self Awareness Skills – Grow the ability to look at motives and impact, and decide if adjustment is needed. The reactions we get from others depends a lot on our own motivations and assumptions we carry into the interaction – adjusting our perspective often results in desired change.
Step 3. Master the Art of Human Nature – Re-familiarize them with “the nature of human nature”, and how to make it work for them.
Step 4. Shift the Mindset One of Interdependence – Learn the components of a model for influencing and leading others, and practice and apply this mindset.
Step 5. Design and Implement an Action Plan – Create an action plan that builds a foundation for strong leadership of self and others.
…so that your staff member grows and develops in line with your original vision for what they can do — for what is needed of their role, and for what is needed from them by their peers.
What success looks like.
When you invest in your employees and staff, you reap the benefits of your choices, perhaps retaining a key player or igniting that spark of potential you saw at one time. All of this helps you as a manager to deliver on organization goals while at the same time getting the work done in such a way that your staff finds the enthusiasm that makes them want to go the extra mile.
